I feel like it would be cheaper just to buy real gutters

of course it would lmao. also doing 5 minutes of research to learn what would work best would save a lot of money lol

This is one of the purest forms of research right here. Trial and error!

The difference between fucking around and science is writing down your results. Thankfully someone’s doing this for all of us.

There are aluminium gutters that are cheaper than the pla used to print this, let alone ABS ones.

Spoken like someone who doesn't belong in 3D printing.

Being a 3D printing nerd should include knowing what's idiotic to 3D print, and shaming people appropriately for intentionally wasting plastic.

[–]KawaiiBakemono12 points2 months, 3 weeks ago

Aluminum gutters are like $4/meter -ish. The protectors/leaf guards/whatevers are not much more.

Yeah, cheaper and more reliable to just head to Home Depot or Friedman's and pick up what you need in this case, unless the process is the point 😉

“I used regular PLA” I found the problem.

There’s a lot of projects on here that just make me ask “why?”.

3d printing is a fantastic tool. Like all tools, there’s a time and a place for it, but if you have a box of screws you should probably put down the hammer.

Large, mass-produced, thin plastic/metal building materials, furniture, etc. is just about the worst thing to 3d print lol. It’s time consuming, inefficient, substantially worse quality, substantially more expensive than just buying the thing from Home Depot. There’s no good reason (unless you’re just doing it as a semi-joke/for fun) to 3d print beds, large tables, trash cans, gutters, piping, etc.

It absolutely would. I come to this issue often, design or find a design for something and print, or buy online. Usually if it's something fairly common, and made of plastic, it's far cheaper to just buy it(cause of cost of filament, power consumption, wear and tear on the machine, and likelihood of a reprint eventually). Plus the quality is always far better with injection molding. So there's that too. Cheaper, better quality.

Definitely. My gutters are extruded plastic. The wall mounts however were such a POS that I replaced them with 3D printed ones a few years later and I couldn't be happiert. Printed in PETG though.

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Nknights231 point2 months, 2 weeks ago

Yup , and way less time as well. Costs less than 1$ a foot lol

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]mcbergstedt1 point2 months, 3 weeks ago

It would. It’s like $15 per 10ft (if you include the mounts) cost me like $3k including labor to do my whole house (they also replaced a bunch of trim and flashing)

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]MyNamesMikeD751 point2 months, 3 weeks ago

Gutters are actually expensive af, we just had to replace ours

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]AnonCuriosities1 point2 months, 3 weeks ago

This does look pretty cool and reduces leaf maintenance, but he should have used pet jee
