Plenty of discussion on /r/Simagic

Looks neat, but very little official word from Simagic since showing it off. No mention of pricing or expected release date.

There are also questions of compatibility with existing Simagic bases since they are ditching wireless for USB through the QR.

Lack of front mount on the new base is a no-go for me.

Agreed on the front mount being a no-go. Depending on the reviews I'd be happy to replace the alpha U (even though the highest version will have a significantly lower torque), but the lack of front mount is very annoying...

BTW I wouldn't expect any news for the next couple weeks due to the Chinese new year.

I get the concern as the switch to a different QR connection left M10 users back in the day with an abandoned product. Given the user base is much larger now. Not ensuring full compatibility would be a really bad precedent to set.

This would be a disaster. Id rather buy a simagic wheel instead of converting a different gt style wheel to qr70.

Go watch jackzier video. He has an interview with em a new one.

Any talks about it online, at least that I've been able to find, have been about the Zeus GT. I didn't even know about the formula wheel until a few weeks ago.

I agree the lack of front mount can be a turn-off, and I think we'll just have to wait and see if they changed that for the final product.

There was an interview posted with the CEO a week ago, he had one sitting on the desk and it still didn't have any sort of obvious front mount capability. It's very unlikely to get a change at this point. I'm sure they are already ramping up production.

Hey I know this was from a while ago but thinking about the front mount it could possibly be something similar to what Asetek uses where you remove the front plate and then the mount goes in between the base and that plate. What do you think of this?

They've already confirmed it won't be front mountable.

they said it would be front mountable with an adapter in an interview I saw. Forgot which youtuber it was though.

Seems as though Simagic is going all out on Maglink, so compatibility will be a non issue. Perhaps not full wireless capabilities, but as Simagic is gearing up to open up their ecosystem to other bases as well, it’s not that much of an issue. Just use the MagSafe cable and you’re fine!

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]zachsilveySimagic5 points11 months, 2 weeks ago

I currently use MagLink in order to get SimHub compatibility. But I think it's totally unacceptable for them to require it if someone is using the Simagic ecosystem.

Maybe these wheel will also include wireless for us with existing alpha wheelbases. But I haven't seen confirmation of that.

I found a user manual for this wheel online. From what I can see, If you're using this wheel on the current alpha wheelbase, you'll have no issue. If you have the magnetic screen attached to the wheel, then you'll need maglink to use just that screen, but the wheel will work fine without it.

I think the new EVO bases that have the double contact points are just so that you can use that magnetic screen without needing a maglink.

Let me know if this makes sense

Yeah, looks like that's the case. Completely unacceptable.

hey are ditching wireless for USB through the QR

I believe it's only for compatibility with the other bases, it should still be wireless with a simagic bases like the neo wheel as far as I know

How are we ditching wireless for usb through QR? We can see the wireless on the base

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]zachsilveySimagic5 points11 months, 2 weeks ago

How can you "see" wireless. The existing alpha bases communicate to the wheels via 2.4Ghz wireless, the contacts on the QR only supply power. The new wheelbases supply both power and data through the QR.

[–]GreenInflation29141 point11 months, 2 weeks ago

Does this mean future QRs with USB pass through will negate the need for maglink to use simhub?

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]zachsilveySimagic1 point11 months, 2 weeks ago

No way to know at this point, but I doubt it. Willing to bet that the data connection through the QR will use CAN bus but that's just a shot in the dark.

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Budget-Government-880 points11 months, 2 weeks ago

Then I am lost on how this isn’t wireless lol

Are we using wireless here only to refer to a 2.4Ghz connection? Because for me, it would be any connection not requiring me to plug in a wire, which is not necessary here

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]zachsilveySimagic1 point11 months, 2 weeks ago

The point is that the current alpha wheelbases use actual wireless to connect the wheel. The new wheelbases use a physical connection, if you want to call that wireless that's fine. There has been no confirmation from Simagic that that the new wheels will be compatible with the older wheelbase wireless.

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Budget-Government-881 point11 months, 2 weeks ago

I guess that’s fine, i just never considered the “wireless” term so was contingent on the 2.4Ghz connection. I can see why this might not be considered wireless but, as far as the use of it is concerned, it’s not much (if any at all) different. The methods of communication just are, but connection is relatively the same. Slap wheel on QR and boom, connected.
