Obviously this sort of thing ain’t fair to the defense. What would the alternative be, though? Maybe make rules on what sliding should look like? Make the QB do something specific?
Or make it rule that once you’re outside the tackle box you’ve given up all protections as a QB. Don’t wanna be deemed a runner, then don’t f-in run. 🤷🏻♂️
After Bo Nix injured his back, he started sliding really early on his runs. Didn't leave it up to chance at all that he might get his head taken off. Sure, he left some yards on the field, but if you don't want to take the hit, get down early. If you want the extra yards, then go get the yards and take the contact.
I honestly don't know what they expect defensive players to do. They're supposed to go thigh to waist height. Then the QB puts his head right at that level, and they're the bad guy for hitting him. You even see defenders trying to twist in midair to avoid the contact and still get called.
This, Bo was sliding before defenders lowered their shoulders to begin the tackling motion. It was clear he'd given himself up and totally fair to the defender. Mahomes realizes he's gonna take the hit and just collapses like a dying star. Reminds me of the second Chargers game this year where Herbert began his slide within arms length of the Broncos defender and of course he got hit, and got the flag. This shit is getting out of hand.
This could work too. Can’t other players, in theory, slide too though? So that same thing applies to them?
Some players already do or some version of a slide anyways. Tyler Lockett the most notable, I've seen Amon Ra do a dive rather than take a big hit
That is literally the rule as it exists right now. Any player can slide.
Thats 100% how it should be.
If you flop you get penalized. Don’t fake going out of bounds and then keep going or you’re fair game
These moron refs can’t figure out pass interference. You think they’re gonna be able to determine the difference between real and fake going out of bounds?
Yeah there should be some sideline rules too. Maybe a penalty for late hit doesn’t apply unless BOTH feet have stepped out of bounds
Once a runner makes a move to evade a defender they no longer get slide protections.
Done.
You can slide in the open field while running and defenders close. But you start juking and spinning? Get lit up bro.
Dont call it if the QB decides to slide .2 yards before contact instead of a safe distance
If a defender is within 3 yards when you start your slide you don't get the flag. There has to be some onus on the offensive player to protect himself, if you're giving yourself up to avoid contact you can't milk maximum amount of yardage
Just get rid of roughing the passer entirely. Late hits are already penalties. Just leave it at that
They just need to review all personal foul and interference calls. No excuse not to at this point.
Definitely something that should be challengeable too
Youd have to make a rule that specifies minimum distance a defender has to be away for it to actually count as giving yourself up and have protections as if the play is over. Or a penalty to slide if defenders are too close.
get rid of qb specific protections if you want to run then you are a runner.
No more sliding
