Restore AllHide UnarchivedWhen my twins were in middle school their History teacher played this song. It is one if my favorites. Anyway my kids start singing along teacher was like " how do you know this song "? They both said " our mom " . Teacher was like " alright Mom"
Follow it up with The Mary Ellen Carter, and I will definitely be in tears.

Is this an American thing? I can’t really relate to why such a simple song creates those feelings for many people. I mean I read about the ship‘s tragedy online but as a German I have no emotional connection to this particular event.
Surprisingly that wasn't Gordon Lightfoot's first song about a shipwreck. In 1969, he released a song called Ballad of Yarmouth Castle.

That is such a horribly lonely feeling of loss and regret and it all comes through in that part.
