Prior to that, it was *very* effective. Especially in conjunction with their decades long strategy of just outright buying and dismantling companies with anything interesting, then to use or shelve as desired. Last I'd looked at the tallies, it was to the tune of hundreds of companies, wouldn't be shocked if it's well into the thousands range by now.

As demonstrated, that doesn't work as well with open source projects.

They can't "buy and dismantle" FOSS, at least not GPL ones, even if somehow Trovalds sold Linux to MS it would just be immediately forked and work would carry on as usual and MS would be left with nothing. It sucks that companies can use most FOSS for their own profits without ever contributing anything, but it's exactly what makes it impervious from hostile takeovers.

without ever contributing anything

Microsoft donate a lot of money and resources to the Linux community.

That is because up to 60% of all Azure customers run Linux you disphit, not because Microsoft cares about open source or Linux in the slightest.

They are not even in the top 10 contributors, freaking Huawei from Totalitarian China contributes more to the Linux kernel than Microsoft does.

But the real irony to the whole situation is a "Far-Left" idiot like yourself, that supports terrorist organisations such as Hamas, openly defending multibillion dollar corporations.

You are no different than hypocrite Bill Burr who made a career out of speaking against corporations, governments and power, going to fucking Saudi Arabia to do a comedy show recently.

The biggest preachers are the worst sinners, as the old saying goes.

Awww, Diddums doesn't like being corrected.

It's ok, admit your sexuality. Let the rage out.

Indeed, you do need preach less. Especially given you're wrong. It's hilarious. Tell us more about Hamas!

They can buy and dismantle Valve, the primary driver of gaming progress on Linux over the past half decade.

They can install people on powerful steering committees to complicate Linux usage. See the W3C for an example.

Something being FOSS is a line of protection, but it doesn't make it independent of power or money. Let's not be naive.

Forking a project takes more than ideology, it takes resources to feed developers and make your fork appealing to other people. And ultimately the GPL is defended by the threat of legal action, and lawyers cost money.

They cannot buy Valve. It is a privately owned company, that isn't for sale.

Valve has no reason to sell out, and nothing to gain, by doing so.

As far as I can tell, I would say Gaben is not a fan of Microsoft. He ducked out at the perfect time and for the last 20 years has been almost subverting Microsoft's attempts at locking people into its platform, for gaming anyway. He did say that working for Microsoft way back when was a great opportunity for growing his software engineering skills. But, he's has also noted how much of a "train wreck" Xbox Live is, and shit on Windows, as far back as 2012.

"In order for innovation to happen, a bunch of things that aren’t happening on closed platforms need to occur. Valve wouldn’t exist today without the PC, or Epic, or Zynga, or Google. They all wouldn’t have existed without the openness of the platform. [...]

"We are looking at the platform and saying, 'We've been a free rider, and we've been able to benefit from everything that went into PCs and the Internet, and we have to continue to figure out how there will be open platforms."

As long as he's around, Valve will not be sold. There's no reason for him to. He's already literally a billionaire with a deep sea research company and a philanthropist.

Maybe when he's dead, if his children somehow decide they want to be rid of it, and if they don't write some kind of charter for the company to adhere to or something, someone may somehow, more than a decade from now, gain control of Valve.

What would Valve gain by going public? They don't need the capital, and they know the consequences of going public.

If they did need the capital, it would mean people aren't buying games, or games are not being made, for people to buy.

If the PC market suffers enough to force valve to sell, what value would they be to Microsoft?

You keep the faith, champ!

Nobody gives a flying fuck about the desktop market share, why are you people so obsessed about that?

Many people do not even own or use desktops anymore, Android, which is Linux based, is the most popular operating system in the world currently.

Even gaming is primarily done on mobile now, with up to 55% according to the latest metrics.

Keep obsessing and fawning over the declining desktop market share(Windows fell to 69% recently), the only area where Windows is still confined.

Even Nex Playground outsold the Xbox recently, during the Black Friday sales.

A fucking children's console that runs Android by the way, is preferred over the Xbox.

Buckle up buttercup.

Lol, the only metric phone gaming matters in, is how much money it extracts from consumers. Because that's all it's designed to do. There are no passionate indie devs making phione games, because they genuinely believe that it's the best place for their games.

Desktop+Couch+Handheld are 100% where actual gaming happens, and where actual game devs do their best work.

Phone games are slop designed to steal your money, so obviously, any numbers that include that demographic, are irrelevant.

I have never stated that mobile gaming is flawless, but you also have to agree that a lot of computer gaming is exactly how you described as well.

Plenty of computer games are pay to win too.

But it does not really matter in the end, as my response was not about discussing the ethics of the gaming industry, but more about the shifting and changing dynamics of modern computing.

It is absolutely ridiculous and misleading for Windows fanboys to constantly obsess over the desktop market share, where arguably plenty of people globally could not care less about as they do not own or use computers anymore.

One has to look at the big picture before making any conclusions.

Which was the ultimate point of my response.

The mistake you're making, is thinking the desktop market is shrinking. It's not. The phone market is growing. Phones are cheaper and more accessible than desktop PCs, and they're virtually required to participate in society, so of course it would be an absolutely gargantuan market.

The size of the phone market, doesn't diminish the relevance of the desktop market in the gaming sphere. Phone "gamers" are a completely separate market from desktop gamers.

The presence of slop on desktop doesn't change the reality. There has always been slop games on PC.

The mistake you're making is thinking he's using logic in his incoherent ramblings about Hamas, Israel, US and Xbox. The guy is a supressed incel who hates his on sexuality. He won't be able to listen and learn until he admits this personal truth.

Oh, they are sure as shit retrying EEE right now. Hell, even Linus is saying 'be friendly' with Microsoft.

Same old shit, again.

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]atomic1fire2 points3 weeks, 6 days ago

I don't think they have to do that anymore.

Current MS only cares about services and AI, if linux users are buying xbox subscriptions for cloud play or some sort of Wine shim, that's money Microsoft is paid every month.

Ditto for Office 365. If Microsoft can get you to just use their cloud apps from a linux distro, they're still getting paid.
