It's still illegal to dump it in a water body like that.

It's still illegal to dump it in a water body like that.

You’re right — unpermitted deposits into public lakes/rivers are generally illegal here and some residents might not be aware of bylaws and environmental regulations.

I’m not defending dumping; I’m explaining the custom and pointing to the responsible practice most GTA groups already use: contained immersion (home tub or organizer-provided tank) so the ritual is kept and the water is protected. Toronto organizers often provide artificial ponds/tanks, which is a simple way to honour the ritual and take collective responsibility for our lakes and rivers.

The fix is simple: keep the faith, contain the immersion — dry the clay and reuse/compost the solids, and dispose of the water on land (not into storm drains). That’s the community-minded approach.

Edit: In most Ontario cities (incl. Toronto/Mississauga), driveway car-wash water that enters the curb “catch basin” goes to the storm sewer and then untreated to creeks and Lake Ontario. Because of that, cities prohibit letting soaps/dirty wastewater reach storm drains. So people who are indulging in these practices need to be reported as well.

then go and ask your community to not pollute our rivers, this has been going on for 3 days, and i eventually decided to post, after the called me a racist and Hinduphobic for calling them out

That's the thing blud you don't understand.

Hinduism/India isn't one religion or culture it's a mix of culture like Europe is.

In my region in India this dumping or immersion isn't done on this day. They do prayers inside home.

They may follow the same religion but they aren't my community. India isn't one community other than having one passport. It's not my job to tell them.

It's like me asking a German person to go talk to their community because an Albanian did something. Like bruh

India is a country. Europe is made up of many countries.

It would be like asking a German to speak to Germans.

Nope. There goes your whole understanding.

While India is a country, it is way more diverse than Europe in itself. There is no single race or ethnicity within it. There are more languages and dialects than Europe combined.

As an Indian myself, I can't even understand the script of 90% of Indian languages let alone speak them since I speak only one and can understand 1 or 2 more.

Similarly, culturally Indians can be as different as Russian is to an Italian or English is to a Georgian.

So no, not evey Indian belong to my community that it becomes my responsibility to tell them.

The culture where immersion is done for idols is different from mine since they speak a different language, belong to different ethnicity, eat different food. The only common attributes are the religion (but they belong to a different form) and the passport.

You do a good job at explaining it, but sadly a lot of the ppl in this comment section are willfully ignorant… I deal with folks like this in my own family, it is exhausting.

I dont care that much, it's India.

Irrelevant to whether you care or not, it's still called subcontinent for a reason.

You think that these racist blokes have brain cells? No point in educating them coz they don't want to in the first place. They just want to cry and want someone to take a blame.

I will dumb it down for you: It’s you vs the Quebecois. Do you get the difference? Cultural and the way those people do their own thing, even at the federal level?

[–]Muted_Buy83860 points4 months, 1 week ago

Why is it us vs them? We're Canadians. We even teach our children how to speak French in the non-French areas.

Bad example, you dumbed it down too far. You remember what Robert Downey Jr warned about?

India has 1,369 languages and 705 recognized ethnic groups. It’s a conglomeration of former kingdoms slapped together by the British Empire. It’s not the same as Germany lmao. Really showing your ignorance here.

It’s a conglomeration of former kingdoms slapped together by the British Empire.

India has been a civilizational state long before even Britain came into existence, and has been one of the oldest civilizations still in existence besides China!

Those lies were spread to keep many people looking up to your Kings and Queens.

Civilization in that area is very old yes, I’m just saying it hasn’t always been one country of India. The geographic area that is now India has had many different kingdoms and states (eg. Rajputs, Bengals, Mughals, etc) that have been split up and brought back together over the course of the last 5000 or so years. It was the British that took all those disparate cultural and ethnic groups and stuck them together into one country, for better or for worse.

It's true that the subcontinent wasn’t a single modern nation-state for most of history. But that’s also true of Italy, Germany, and even the UK — political unification is recent almost everywhere.

What did exist for millennia was a shared civilizational and geographic idea: “India/Hind/Hindustan/Bharat” appears in Greek, Persian/Arabic, Chinese, and Sanskrit sources; pan-subcontinental pilgrimage/trade/learning networks tied regions together; and Sanskrit/Prakrit, later Persian, then vernaculars served as administrative and cultural linkers.

Periodic large-scale polities also unified most of the subcontinent: Maurya (3rd c. BCE), Gupta (4th–6th c.), Delhi Sultanate/Mughal (13th–18th c.), and later Maratha paramountcy. So the area was not merely “a mosaic the British glued together.”

The British did impose a single administrative grid (railways/ICS/census), but their India wasn’t fully one unit either: roughly two-fifths of the territory remained princely states under British suzerainty, and the Raj ultimately split the country at Partition.

The final political unification of hundreds of princely states after 1947 was done by Indians — so the modern nation state India that exists today was done by Indians by the likes of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, not by the British.

We agree that no one should be putting anything into public water? We shouldn't be asking for exceptions; we should be pushing community-minded solutions that work for all, something that already works in this case here in GTA: contained immersion (home tubs, organizer tanks/artificial ponds).

Also, this isn’t a “my community vs your community” thing — it’s for all residents following the same laws and environmental regulations.

Edit: In most Ontario cities (incl. Toronto/Mississauga), driveway car-wash water enters the curb “catch basin” goes to the storm sewer, and then untreated to creeks and Lake Ontario.

But you were the one who shifted it into a “my community vs your community” thing, indirectly. Instead of addressing the actual issue, you defended one bad practice by bringing up another. That’s like saying “why only talk about crime in my country, when they also happen elsewhere?”—it doesn’t make the problem any less real.

This is a very common mentality in India: when someone points out one bad thing, people deflect by bringing up another, as if stacking negatives somehow cancels them out. It doesn’t. Stick to the original point. If you want to discuss car washing, make a separate post about it.

It's all about — consistency. Keeping all pollutants out of public waters and using a community-minded approach. Same law, same fix, no group blame.

That's quite rich of you to talk about the common mentality of India, isn't it? You can do better!

One issue at a time or nothing gets solved. This is probably a fairly newish practice compared to other, lets not add more to what already needs to be fixed.

So because he’s Hindu, he holds the collective responsibility of all Hindus? Are you the first to take responsibility whenever a white person commits a crime?

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]WiseGirl_1013 points4 months, 1 week ago

You’re not Hinduphobic for calling them out. But you’re being Hinduphobic for asking other Hindus to speak to their community.

I’m not responsible for the actions of others just because we share the same race or religion. There’s clearly common sense people here that do practice their faith in a way that minimizes impact to the environment.
