Octopuses are practically sapient, though. About as intelligent, emotional, and socially aware as a 1st grader. If it weren’t for how their reproduction cycles work, they might’ve already formed some type of quasi-civilization in tide pools around the world by now…

Sure but wouldn’t it be cool if, because they have such a short lifespan, they developed quicker than us? So a 2 year ole octopus had the intelligence of a 23 year old human?
This is more of a sci-fi prompt btw, I don’t think the Earth will be around long enough for them to evolve to such an extent 😭
There is a book where that's one of several plot lines.
Not around as in made uninhabitable for most life, or more like when the sun swallows the planet? Always curious when people say things like “long after the earth is gone.”
Exactly. To have the intelligence they have is a miracle in itself!
Goes to show how reproduction isn't always the best option.. sometimes Darwin has a different plan to continue the survival of the species. We are a great example of how too much reproduction is harmful
That too.
Imagine these dudes if their brains didn't stop maturing until they were 26 years old and they could live for almost a century.
And that’s the crazy thing, their ability to mimic patterns on their skin is a tool they use to communicate with each other! They’ve even been seen attempting to communicate to other animals using the same methods, on top of mimicking the behaviors of other animals to avoid detection from predators! Combined with their abilities to use tools, they are definitely in the top 5, if not 3 most sapient creatures on Earth!
Do you mean sentient or sapient?
Sapient. Sentience simply describes the ability to sense things. Sapience describes a level of brain advancement comparable to or equal to that of an average human.
