Also that’s the reason for the off centered coats of arms in many flags

I always assumed the pole would be on the left side of the flag tho!
My guess is that part closer to the pole will be flatter and less flappy compared to the other end (which would make the flappy side look compressed)
No, it's because there is often an additional strip of fabric on the side of the flag closest to the pole, which has the grommets that the rope goes through. This fabric is almost always white, so its presence, added on to the Japanese flag, would make the red circle look off-center to the right if it were centered on just the flag's width.
Here's an example of this fabric on a flying flag.
You say "no" with such confidence when the person you are replying to is 100% correct. It's due to legibility when it's flapping in the breeze.
Your reasoning would account for shifting by an inch or 2 for the fabric trim, not the drastic left of center we see on a lot of historic flags
My answer is specifically in regards to the Japanese flag's red circle being shifted 1%. The other theory absolutely fits for the Spanish flag and others.
I believe so. The coat of arms would then be less flappy and more visible.
It is, the CoA is always to be intended to be closest to the pole that way it’s visible even with little wind

It looks more "centered" because the majority of the right side is flapping in the wind.
That doesn't look centered at all but I don't think that's the intention anyway, it looks great like you say because of what's in focus when the flag is blowing. Definitely not giving anything which would appear to be centered horizontally though
Yeah but… that one took it too far. It’s still way left. Designed to fly from a tree trunk maybe?
The right part of the flag (the postless side) is always flapping and you actually almost never see it as full rectangle. If you move graphics closer to the pole it will stay in the center of VISIBLE part of the flag.
The CoA being closer to the flagpole allows to: a) be seen with little wind and b) appear more centered when the flag is flapping
It has to do with how the brain processes shapes. Essentially, the brain sees the flagpole as part of the flag. To your brain, that edge of the flag is the back side of the pole. So if the circle is perfectly centered on just the flag, your brain sees the flagpole side as a little longer than the non-flagpole side.
Square vs rectangle is my assumption
They had more sangría than sake..
If they are anything like my Spanish Abuelo was, the flag was designed several Cognacs and 2 packs of cigarettes (per person) in to the design session, and if that all sounds a bit extreme, it’s only because it would have lasted 13 hours and 10 of those hours would have been spent telling dirty jokes and talking about beautiful women and politics, with the last 3 spent arguing over some nonsense that they would have all forgotten by the last 10 minutes anyway.
I'm Spanish, and I can confirm that
