Muse. I’ve seen them live twice and it’s been a blast both times.
Absolution and Origin of Symmetry are top-tier 00s rock albums.
Showbiz and Black holes are great too. Even Resistance has some bangers can’t lie
The Resistance is my go to example for wildly inconsistent albums.
Agreed. The symphony parts are so unnecessary. If it was trimmed down to just the bangers (MK ultra, Uprising, Unnatural selection) it would be up there with the best
Oh wild, the Symphony is the best part of the album to me. I’d be culling shit like Guiding light, which is one of the most insufferable songs in their discography
To me the peaks of the symphonies don’t pay off after the buildups. The piano buildups Muse do don’t hit for me. I always held preference over the punchier groovy tracks in their discography
Actually forgot that existed because of how little fondness I have of it
Serious argument to be made for being one of the best live acts of all time. I saw them at Reading in 2017 and they brought out Brian Johnson for Back In Black. Still the coolest concert moment I’ve seen
Yep. And Matt Bellamy really shows off his guitar chops live. You don’t realize he is low key a prodigy until you have heard him live.
Lots of little flourishes and variations, improvisation on solos, extras notes played to fill in and make ambient sounds, extended intros and outros, crazy use of effects. He goes beast mode and has great charisma. He is truly the rock and roll showman of the modern era
Say what you want about their new stuff, but when I saw the man break out an 8 string, I went nuts. Even their newest album (their weakest imo) had some BANGERS on it. I love their older stuff as well, but what really hooks me is how they keep making their heaviness heavier.
I’ve seen them live twice and both times were out of this world good.
I definitely understand and agree with a lot of the criticisms about their newer stuff. But like you said, their live shows are absolutely worth it.
Last time I saw them, Matt Bellamy had a miniature synthesizer attached to his wrist and was playing a small melody of something on that, while he had a mask of sorts on. I can't really put into words what exactly it was he was doing, but I remember it being really really exciting.
I have a tie for the best live show I’ve ever seen: Joanna Newsom and Muse. They seriously put on a truly fantastic show.
I did too on a whim and while I likely wouldn’t put on an album they really were built for an arena. They were excellent live.
Saw them once in 2010 for the Resistance tour. Thought they were great. I’ve been unimpressed with pretty much everything they’ve put out since. No doubt they’re talented musicians, I just can’t do their ham-fisted conspiracy music.
That's a fair opinion to have. I like The 2nd Law a lot, but likewise, I've been unimpressed with everything since then. Having said that, I saw them on tour in 2023, and even their worst songs sounded outstanding live. Plus, the stage show itself was just incredibly impressive.
But I get why you say what you did.
