What would be very nice would be to be able to write scheme instead of elisp.

I am not sure. While I believe that scheme has a better design in a few details, I consider the deep integration of Emacs to be very important. All the functions are self documented and introspectable. If you allow different languages this will certainly get worse. The same applies to emacs-ng, which integrates v8.
