Sounds about right lol. Chris seems like a genuinely cool dude that loves what he does and loves his fans
Chris also has had positive interactions with Team4Star, which is a passion project of the fans.
Sean on the other hand.....takes after Shueisha and Toei....
Oh yeah I’ve seen Sean’s comments on abridged and tfs 🙄 he’s worse than Lars Ulrich with Napster back in the day because at least Lars was technically probably losing a few percentages of a cent every year. Sean on the other hand is just jealous that someone other than himself is getting attention for DBZ and the Goku character.
He’s as out of touch with reality as Toei and Shueisha are when it comes to this belief that fan projects such as abridged somehow harm their IP. And I 100% guarantee you that Sean sees DB as a whole as HIS. HE is Goku and HE is DB.
I’m guessing they don’t like that an “untrained actor” is able to do what they do, like sync their lines to the animated lips and such. It seems like it makes him feel insecure! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The lips are synced to the lines, not the other way around. TFS actually posted a video back in the day detailing their process of isolating lip flap frames, key framing them on frames in line with the peaks in the audio track, then adjusting as needed.
That's not to say TFS doesn't have some really fantastic voice acting talent, but this example in particular is more indicative of their editing talents.
Ironic thing is that Masako Nozawa exists and is actually still alive, the original Japanese VA for Goku and he still has this attitude that HE is Goku, nobody else. I’ve actually seen clips of him praising Nozawa though, to be fair, but I’ve seen like 1, maybe 2 clips of this?
He is always respectful when it comes to Masako Nozawa.
I was really just saying that because in your original comment you said he IS Goku amd he IS DB.
what?
That doesn’t mean he’s good person though.
ok? i'm just making sure the record is straight on that particular point.
Fully aware, I'm also pointing out about his behaviour.
I realize this isn't central to your comment - but I'd encourage you to go back and watch Lars' testimony again (it's not that long). Not only does our collective narrative completely misremember his point, but he was completely right about what file sharing like this meant for bands and musicians who couldn't make a living by touring - and it's extremely relevant given the Spotification of the music industry.
And he was still wrong. He said what he said because he wanted to project an IMAGE of "protecting" smaller artists. That does/did absolutely NOTHING to actually help smaller artists and he never went out and tried to mitigate any of these issues despite the resources and knowledge at his disposal (for whatever personal reasons). Let's not sit here and pretend the guy cared about too much besides having an excuse to advocate for getting his bag in that instance. The spotification of the industry is a direct result of greater economic struggle and lack of proper regulation. It's not so simple as "music file sharing bad".
This is a wild take
Not really. This is all happening because our economic model wasn't designed with enough forethought (or it was designed to be evil: take your pick). Art is meant to be shared. Not sold.
We live in a broken system that's not going to be fixed by continuing to pretend that it will be easy. It needs full reform across the board.
What do you propose?
The popularization of the means of production, perhaps?
Men rich in virtue, studying beautifulness, living in peace, with their three acres and a cow?
Nobody threading on you?
What, indeed?
I propose we start with full transparency. Why oh why is it I wonder that so much evil continues to thrive despite our world "leaders".... Checks notes... "best" efforts. Why oh why indeed?
I like to think transparency would help find a few real answers.
What a hypocrite! Not devoting his entire life and resources to every opinion he expresses.
I never said it was his responsibility. In fact I originally had typed a sentence in that comment stating as much but I deleted it because I realized my opinion about that fact is nuanced and irrelevant. But since you bring it up. With great power comes great responsibility. I'm sure he did his best where he thought it mattered. But my opinion (and yours) are entirely irrelevant because we don't know him and don't have the right to judge. I suppose you or someone else might have some right to say something a little more seriously about him, assuming you've read literally near everything there possibly is to know about him.
Lars was not wrong, sorry but napster did more harm then good, especially to musicians.
He was wrong. Napster wasn't in the right either. Those things can both be true at the same time.
I mean in terms of the English Dub he kind of is, it’s like Kevin Conroy as Batman or Hamill as Joker. As far as an English voice goes I can’t fathom anyone else voicing Goku
Unfortunately Sean is a dick and Kevin was a genuinely nice guy
Good thing we had Nozowa as the true Goku
I remember when I was introducing dragon ball to a friend, all I could find was subtitles. I grew up on the ocean and Funimation crew, so I grudgingly accepted watching the Japanese. After about 30 episodes, I couldn’t really go back. When the Super Hero movie came out, I was pissed dubbed was the only option in my area. Was surprised how much those folks got in recent years. I still prefer OG Japanese.
There were plenty of people who played Goku in English before Schemmel, though; Barbara Goodson, Ian James Corlett, Saffron Henderson, Peter Kelamis...and really, the only reason Schemmel is even considered "the" voice is because he's the one in all the games that sustained the fandom in the desert of the 2000's.
Honestly, I'd argue Kelamis was a better fit for Goku than Schemmel is, anyways; he closer matches the general style of voice that Nozawa does for the character.
Plenty of people voiced Batman before Conroy too; but he’s still held as the gold standard.
Yeah but Konroys never bullied a Con into uninviting a fellow Batman VA.
Schemmel HAS bullied cons into uninviting other Goku VAs though.
What's a VA?
It means voice actor. The people voicing animated characters.
Sean Schemmel is one of the worst actors to play Goku in English though. Definitely the worst to play adult Goku.
Yeah, really his only strength that’s arguably above the others is his yelling/screaming ability.
Abridged is what got me more into Dragonball.
I bought Dragon Ball Fusions and watched all of Super on crunchyroll because of it.
That's fucking bizarre
There is nothing more misunderstood than Lars and the Napster saga. Imagine your songs get fucking leaked before you release them, that’s criminal and he had every right to be pissed about it. It had nothing to do with what most people think as far as Lars being a greedy person trying to squeeze money out of fans. Now we have Spotify where nobody makes any money from streaming and Reddit loses their minds over it while not understanding the genesis of this whole thing.
To be fair, DBZA has done a fair amount of damage (for lack of a better term), in that it wound up being a primary means for a non-insignificant portion of the fanbase watched the show. It essentially messed up a decent chunk of fans.
How so?
For many, it's the sole frame of reference for the show.
Oh really? I'm only really aware of it through like some clips that have turned into memes.
Which raises the broader issue of overprotection of the IP starving fans for content leading to fam made content like dbza.
There are nearly 500 episodes of Dragon Ball content and 17 movies and dozens of games. Who’s starving for dragon ball content? What you mean to say is people don’t want to pay for things and think they’re entitled to free content.
Was it Sabat that brought in TFS members to do the voices for the Cell Games video during Kai Final Chapters?
Sabat has been the casting director for the Funimation dubs for a while now, so yeah.
Possibly. I recall an event where one of the members was at a con and I think they reenacted the "it's over 9000" scene. Think it was Kaiser?
It was Taka, the voice of Nappa.
He did but that’s been redubbed unfortunately because Shueisha…
Sabat wanted to give one of the TFS guys a role in DB Super until Toei basically said "if you do that we're taking away the English rights."
In defense of Sean I'm pretty sure this is why he never really said anything for TFS. He knows Toei absolutely hates DBZA and he doesn't want to piss them off, and it isn't really his place to do so.
