Two options:

Hive has always been basically one big pyramid scheme to feed what they call "soulfire" to the top, which is created with murder. The whole gun dynamic could be about that.
The worms are paracausal beings just like the Ahamkara, but instead of eating dreams, they feed on the player's time spent exerting power by violence.
