yeah, the name of this "feature" is "crowd control". it's something that mods turn on.
regular users can't override it unless i'm missing something. it's just another one of those unwanted "features" that they announce every two weeks while ignoring reddit's real problems.
it's there. not sure if it's in a different location in shitty reddit, but in old reddit you go to "subreddit settings", then scrolldown to the "other settings" box. (it's below "discoverability options") and you'll have some sliders for "crowd control".
not sure if only certain mods will have the ability to see it though. i can certainly see it on my test sub though.
yeah, i have no idea why the admins thought that subreddit moderators should have the right to auto-collapse comments on my screen, other than the obvious answer that the admins simply don't think. (automod pinned comments on every thread are equally obnoxious)
there are still comments that are auto collapsed even when you set your preferences to never collapse.
reddit views it as a "feature", as this auto-collapsing is something moderators turn on for their sub. you see it in /r/conservative, but they're not the only sub with this turned on.
as far as i can tell, unlike "default sort", there's no way to override this functionality once a mod team turns it on.
