Half guard is good for the top guy in MMA. Prime ground and pound position.
It's not like JDM had much better option, he had to get to half guard and try to get up.
I agree, Islam's control is elite. Not many people would be able to do better. The comment above mine sounded like they were saying JDM had Islam in his half guard like he was the one in control when he very much was not.
Yea his options were limited, but you could argue that JDM would have had an easier time scrambling and escaping side control since they both would have been sweaty and unlike half guard, theres no leg for Islam to hold onto. Obviously a downside is he may have had to expose his back to escape side control. It's definately a better position against the cage where you can push off the cage with your feet too.
I felt like Islam wanted top half and was not looking for side control. Idk if Jack could even get bottom side control if he wanted to.
You are right. At one point I saw Islam actually forcing half guard from a side control.
Agree 100%
In a different thread apparently the plan was to give up enough position to go toward belly down/turtle and then try to stand back up.
edit: Islam either didn't want to give up half guard (half mount) or would have threatened full mount.
This honestly sounds like a believable game plan from JDM. I think it's hard to hold someone down in mount or side control in MMA if you're looking for the finish. JDM happens to be pretty good at scrambling so I think this would have been a good game plan.
That said, Islam has been perfectly fine setting up his subs from half guard and if JDM's team didn't plan for that that's a big tactical error on their part.
Mount and side control aren't as dominant in MMA as in BJJ. Khabib mostly rode the legs with his opponents legs crossed and extended while Khabib triangles the legs and the opponents back was to the cage.
Yes, but no closed guard.
