i'm a first year english major as well and a few of my older friends that were already going to uofc told me that i didn't really have to follow the first year guide. i'm pretty sure they built it that way just so you don't have to attend the spring semester, but what i did personally was i put down 4 for fall, 4 for winter, and then 2 for spring, so it still equates to 10 classes.
i would just recommend looking at your degree requirements and figuring out how many classes you need and what kind of classes they are (2 are needed for science, you have to take 2 200-level english classes to get into the 300 level ones, etc.)
Your degree requirements will be in your student centre, if you scroll all the way down there will be a list of links and it will be there!
