Hitting your head hurts. I've almost drowned before when holding my breath too long. It wasn't all that bad.
Drowning in calm water because of holding your own breath too long is a lot different than drowning while getting ravaged by raging currents.
Also, define "almost drowned". Did you inhale water? If not you didn't almost drown.

There's no peaceful way of drowning. Waterboarding is torture, now imagine it's happening from inside your lungs.
