Even lots of American songs are stolen American songs. Biggie smalls, love his music but many of his songs are ripped and rapped over. Theres so many other examples but i know of 3 of his biggest hits are "stolen", legally im sure. But it just feels disingenuous. "House of the rising sun" has several artists. And Bob Dylan the musical genius he is has had a few songs "stolen". Idk i guess thats the business. But Nirvana covered Lake of Fire and at the end Kurt says "that was the Meat Puppets" (in my live spotify recording) and it just seems way better calling out the original artist at the end like that; though thats the only instance that I know of where that happens and that may only be because it was recorded live from a concert. Its art from artists, creators; if it was any other form of art it wouldn't be tolerated. Imagine a painting that had already been painted and acting like yours is original, sculptures, anything else it doesn't hold up. But music gets a pass. Now i will say stuff like Biggies, Eminem, mostly rap where they just rip the instrumentals and make it a completely different song has some ground to stand on but the fact that its not credited still bothers me.
Songs that are sampled are always done with some fee decided beforehand, it's not stealing if it's a business deal. I don't understand why people keep saying this over and over again without understanding this. Do you really think, in this modern age where you can get copystriked by Youtube for even using a 2-3 second clip of pop songs, that artists just "steal" music?
They often use it without permission then pay the lawsuit later. There is also a lot of public domain music that is legally used because of how old it is, Busta Rhymes had a hit song that sampled the theme from Psycho. Wu Tang Clan and others also legally stole content from old movies under the Fair Use Doctrine because they used it in a way that it wasnt originally meant to be used.
A cover isn't "stolen." House of the Rising Sun is a traditional folk song that many artists have covered. Any time a song with a known artist is covered, the original writer will always be credited in the liner notes. Like, if I go to the "This Year" cover by Frank Turner on Spotify, I can go to the song credits and see "written by John Darnielle." Not only that, but the original writer is getting paid composition royalties for the cover. Covered artists are both credited and compensated.
I always tell people Led Zeppelin is the greatest cover band in the world. They stole so much music from African Americans and gave no credit.
Another industry that does this is Japanese animation. For example, Naruto and Cowboy Bebop have lifted scenes from Bruce Lee films. There are countless others as well and not just from Japan.
Also so many of our songs are stolen too, and it's not some obscure songs either, I'm talking about some of the biggest bollywood hit songs from early 2000s
