The black plague, manifest destiny, slavery, colonial era, basically every period of time prior to the advent of modern medicine.
To be clear, im looking at this from a specifically United States view because that is where I live. Furthermore, im not saying that shit isnt fucked right now, it is. My thinking goes like this, I recently had a child, and before having them I went back and forth with my partner on the ethics of having kids, and where we came down was that if people were having kids in the face of all of these horrible things, we could muster the strength to do the same.
We are still in slavery.
Are you referring to the prison labor system? If so, it is not even close to the system of chatle slavery, which is what I was referring to. The prison labor system is still terrible, but you cant be born a slave at least. If youre referring to global slave labor, then again, im speaking from specifically a lens focused on the material conditions of the United States, which is, admittedly, limited.
slavery is legal. not even by some loophole or technicality. it is explicitly legal as long as those enslaved are in prison. this is an exception that is clearly stated in the 13th amendment. it leaves no room for ambiguity. slavery is legal in the US. that is a fact.
Did I say it wasn't? I specifically referred to the prison labor system. I merely stated that the system of prison slave labor is not comparable to chattel slavery during the colonial period. It isnt good and should be something that is stopped, but it isnt the same or even close to comparable. In chattel slavery, children of the enslaved were automatically slaves, there was no escape from slavery full stop, even if you managed to escape your owner you were still considered a slave and were not a full person and could be returned to slavery at any point.
Wow learn some freaking history dude. Embarrassing…
No reason to judge, we don't know their story nor the context in which they asked, might just have been a clarifying question and not a knowledge request. Hope youre doing alright.
