Correction, in Italian and on other old languages, witch is gendered, and there's a gendered word for males who possess magical abilities. Otherwise yes in common nomenclature witches should be gender neutral as male witches are a thing.

Perché non parlare en Italiano? Straiga and strega I believe are the differentiations

assuming google translate is accurate— because i don’t understand it lol. also, google translate is only reading “strega” as “witch”, it doesn’t recognize “straiga”. also also, those words look pretty similar… are we absolutely sure that the male version doesn’t ALSO mean “witch” and it’s just gendered because romance languages tend to gender their nouns?

Ya know I don't speak Italian tbh, and yeah it could be lemme double check my books.

Straiga is a demon spirit

Shrtriga are Albanian vampire witches

The one I was looking for was Stregoni or male witch

google translate is giving lots of different translations for “stregoni”, including wizards, sorcerers, witch doctors, warlocks, and medicine men. so yeah it seems to be similar to the older use of “witch” or “sorcerer” in that old stories will often refer to magic-users interchangeably, the distinctions of how each “type” practices magic is a more modern invention i think
