I did this once when driving my car to get tuned, it was burning off heaps of oil that was on the block and exhaust after I rebuilt it so literally smoke everywhere from the engine bay and pulled up at a petrol station dude lost his mind thinking it would explode. I had a sign in the window saying 'the car is not on fire I promise' which I just tapped and he was like 'oh ..ok?'
My old boss had a new exhaust put on his car. Five days later, we were returning from a job when the exhaust fell off one manifold. Pontiac GTO, so the noise was pretty loud.
This was after midnight, so he said he was going to take it to the exhaust place and leave it there, putting the keys through their letterbox.
When he dropped me off, because he was illiterate, he got me to write a note to leave. That note was what saved him from a defect and ticket when he was pulled over.

Did he get the warning message?
He said it's a Pontiac GTO not hector's civic with a laptop in it mate

SHUT UP…!!!!
I did an engine swap in an XE and when we did the exhaust we didn't tighten the clamp enough. Left home and within 100m it came loose. Just as a cop car was pulling up at an intersection. We pull over and he stops behind us. To make matters worse he had a QLD transport inspector with him. Luckily for me I was not only able to show why there was so much noise but the inspector recognised me as he was recently married to one of my brother's friend's mother. Cop wasn't happy there was no defect or fine.

How does he read road signs to drive safely if he's illiterate?
Not very well. Stop signs, easy because of the shape. Parking restrictions, or anything with words, he would just ask someone.
Numbers, no problem, he could read them. He could work out the payout of any odds at the track.
If placed on the spot in a shop, for instance, he would just say he had left his glasses at home.
