What I never understood about this is that no one chooses to be born, so how can you be forced/expected to live a life of servitude?
I married into a filipino household, their parents are cool so no prob. However my theory is that generally when you live in a country w/ a broken govt, your family is your social safety net and your family is the govt. .
Would certainly explain why a similar thing happens specifically in Rural America
