Reading + writing
Yup. Functional literacy is on the decline in the US. Like people can read individual words but can’t understand directions or questions or interpret sentences they’ve never read before.
So I guess reading comprehension? And this is obviously is connected to shorter attention spans due to social media.
Oh my god, that's such a big one I've noticed in the last year or so. For work I send out info mails about once a week, but the amount of people that reply with questions that are literally in the mail itself has gone up significantly. I've suggested to my supervisor that I should just reply with RTFM, but he said that's too rude.
Actually, it's not only in the US , i see it everywhere. I'd confidently say it's a worldwide problem.
And Australia
Especially reading the entire email and figuring out what kind of response is required.
And writing simple, non complex, direct emails. Not poems or riddles.
My niece, she's about 8, thought she would never have to read or do math as an adult. She thought I was lying when I told her that I do that everyday.
incredibly true! i work with a woman more than twice my age, and trying to read the emails she sends is hellish. not unlike solving a riddle, honestly. she doesn't punctuate at all. it's infuriating.
Yes, particularly comprehension, grammar and punctuation. I’m shocked at how many juniors I have to train that struggle with these things.
South Africa had a presudant who couldn't do both of those. in the beninging people thought it was cool 'til he sold off his country.
