Tying a knot
Yes! Yesterday I discovered that I could tie a crude but serviceable ‘trucker’s hitch’. It was the best solution for tensioning layout lines for fencepost placement.
There's a song for that

I’m picturing the Elton John song Crocodile Rock but about tensioning layout lines with a trucker’s hitch knot.
Way better than their most famous song. Along with "Stonehenge" and the ever applicable "You're Fucked".
It's actually a 2:1 pully. If you pull 2 inches, the load moves 1 inch.
...go on.
Pulleys are simple machines that make lifting objects easier by changing the direction of force or multiplying the force applied. They consist of a wheel with a groove that a rope or cable runs through. When you pull on one end of the rope, the pulley rotates and lifts the load attached to the other end. Here's how they work: Fixed Pulley: A fixed pulley is attached to a support and changes the direction of the force. Pulling down on the rope raises the load, which can be easier than pulling up. Movable Pulley: A movable pulley is attached to the load. It distributes the weight of the load across multiple sections of rope, reducing the amount of force needed to lift it. Mechanical Advantage: Pulleys can be combined to create systems with mechanical advantage, meaning they can lift heavier loads with less force. The more pulleys in a system, the greater the mechanical advantage. Trade-off: While pulleys reduce the force needed, they increase the distance over which the rope must be pulled to lift the load the same height.
Well that's a challenging wank.

I remember my mum trying to teach me to tie my laces... Fucking awful experience. Started off fine, then amounted to "then you just do this" *Mashes hands together* literally zero explanation or attempt to show it in a way that you could see what's going on... Dad never bothered to try, mum gave up with it after about 3 attempts.
In the end, many years later, I resorted to a youtube tutorial and had it down within a couple of minutes...
Something about bunny ears looping around each other. I remember I had a major mental block on learning to tie my shoes, then one day it just clicked for me, and afterwards I found all sorts of new and interesting ways to tie my shoes. A few involved scissors and new laces after.
Damn were you raised by my mom in secret or something? This is exactly how it was for me too

If you cant tie a knot, tie a lot
Speaking of tying things, I didn't know how to tie my shoes until I was 13.
I pretty much only know two knots. Fisherman's knot for obvious reasons and "bunny ears" for shoelaces. Served me well only knowing those two so far.
Learn a basic bowline and you're set.
I'd throw in the taut line hitch. Great to have a loop that you can adjust but doesn't move under tension.
For nearly 30 years, I didn't understand why my shoes would come undone if I didn't use a double knot. For about a third of that time, I knew the difference between a granny knot and a square knot. It just took me a while to actually look at the knot I used in my shoes.
It's better to learn late than never, I guess.
My wife learned a bunch of them when learning to sail
I test my kids on a weekly basis for all kinds of
stupidreally useful things (car parts, plant and bird identification, etc ) last week it was successfully tying bowlines in order to go get ice cream. The truckers hitch and the zeppelin knot are on the list this summer.
Best knot tying site please!
Here you go, NSFW (though seriously it's very good).
I dated a guy for a while that was into shibari. I got tied up down and sideways for about six months. Never really got into it so we went our separate ways.
I use the Knots 3D phone app.
Thank you so much!
I know right around two different knots. That’s about it.
Everyone needs to know at least one knot that doesn't jam like a bowline. It can hold your car but still be easily untied.
When I was a kid I even bought a book that showed how to tie a bunch of different knots and went through a bunch of them. I can’t recall any of them now.
I use the Knot 3D phone app.
I'm not ready for marriage
I've spent a considerable amount of time on sailboats, so I absolutely agree with you!
I can tie my shoes, does that count?
One of these days I should really get around to learning a handful of basic knots which aren't just 'here's how to stop your shoelaces untying themselves'.
Despite going to my friend's camp for 20 years and been out on the water countless times, I have no idea how to tie a boat off on a cleat. It just won't stick in my brain for some reason. Thankfully most of my water excursions were in the kayak.
I'm going to have to work on this at the moment as I'm struggling to know .8mm fishing line into something that won't slip
And a quick knot for shoelaces: https://youtu.be/WgSwvDkJVxE?si=Z-wgKGkbXxVpDCxA
There are great animated GIFs online that show you how to tie different knots. I recommend learning the square knot, bowline, and fishermans knot.
I take it you can knot?
The more I experience life, the happier I am that I started as a fireman. The basic shit you learn like knots, power tool usage, types of wire poles, human function, it’s all stuff that I need as an adult every day… er at least every week
It’s lots or knots. 😂
