Iceland

I second this. More car-centric than other European countries with less dense development, even in Reykjavik.

It has a rugged, frontier-like vibe, with small populations, wide-open landscapes, and a strong outdoors/adventure culture. It reminds me of parts of Canada and Alaska

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Erythite20238 points1 week, 3 days ago

It reminds of the Upper Peninsula

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]SurgicalWeedwacker6 points1 week, 3 days ago

Never been to iceland, but it reminds me of the upper half of the lower peninsula

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Other-Grapefruit-8802 points1 week, 1 day ago

That or like the middle part of the eastern side of the lower to mid peninsula region.

Technically on the North American plate

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (5)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Butch_SpiderDemon40 points1 week, 3 days ago

Geographically, politically, and culturally, Iceland is European.

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (2)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]No_Stick_11013 points1 week, 3 days ago

So, in other words, it's the exact opposite. Feels like it's in Europe, but it is actually in North America.

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (2)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Hot_Coco_Addict1 point1 week, 2 days ago

Nono, it's split down the middle on both plates

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Butch_SpiderDemon-1 points1 week, 3 days ago

No. No it doesn't. Keyword is GEOGRAPHICALLY.

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]No_Stick_11010 points1 week, 3 days ago

Except it is actually in North America, and you literally just claimed that it feels European in culture. Do you even know how this graph works?

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Butch_SpiderDemon1 point1 week, 3 days ago

I said that it feels North American, Iceland has a rugged, frontier-like vibe, with small populations, wide-open landscapes, and a strong outdoors/adventure culture—things often associated with parts of Canada or Alaska. But it is actually in Europe: Geographically, politically, and culturally, Iceland is European. Aka how this graph works.

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]No_Stick_1101-4 points1 week, 3 days ago

It isn't geographically in Europe in any way, shape, or form, Iceland is geographicalky 100% part of North America; and that frontier vibe is much closer to northern Scandinavia than Canada.

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (2)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Butch_SpiderDemon11 points1 week, 3 days ago

It's on both the North American and Eurasian tectonic plate on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. But please try to explain why I'm wrong when I already won the grid.

It actually is in both geographically, if you’re following the tectonic plates. I walked from the N. American plate to the Eurasian plate, it’s really cool! However, if we’re using tectonic plates to determine what “continent” a country or place is in, then Somalia isn’t a part of Africa. Because of this most people just refer to Iceland as European.

[–]Purple-Commission-24-7 points1 week, 3 days ago

Culturally it’s heavily influenced by the US since 1944

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (2)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]your_average_medic7 points1 week, 3 days ago

Culturally most of the world has been since the 20th century (when depending on the country)

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Purple-Commission-241 point1 week, 2 days ago

Not all the world has been dominated by the US like Iceland has. The US airforce still owns keflavik airport. US is almost full cultural victory over Iceland.

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]your_average_medic1 point1 week, 2 days ago

The US has had such a complete cultural victory over so much of the world most of the world thinks Americans don't have culture

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Himmelblaa2 points1 week, 3 days ago

As is most of the western world.

Culturally its close to the other nordic countries, moreso than the US.

It's a volcanic island formed from the two plates moving apart, right? So it's as much "on" the European plate as the North American one.

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Hot_Coco_Addict2 points1 week, 2 days ago

It's on both

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]_Sergii1 point1 week, 3 days ago

Partially on North American plate.

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]New-Friend999610 points1 week, 3 days ago

culturally they're very different tho

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Butch_SpiderDemon8 points1 week, 3 days ago

The culture reminds me of parts of Alaska and Canada in terms of a strong outdoorsy adventurous vibes.

[–]Defiant-Owl-79357 points1 week, 3 days ago

The tourists yes, that come for the nature we have already seen. Not really so much the general population more than anywhere else. When you visit Iceland and the countryside it's mostly tourists, not us🤷🏼‍♀️

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]CursedTeams2 points1 week, 3 days ago

Yeah. People on the East Coast can get to Iceland in the same amount of time West Coasters can get to Hawaii.

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Butch_SpiderDemon0 points1 week, 3 days ago

And? As I've said. Geographically, politically, and culturally, Iceland is European.

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]CursedTeams3 points1 week, 3 days ago

What i mean is that makes Iceland seem North American, because it's so easy for Americans to fly to, compared to the rest of Europe.

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Butch_SpiderDemon0 points1 week, 3 days ago

That's not why I picked it however.

I think they're agreeing with you and just adding their 2 cent my dude

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]ARustybutterknife2 points1 week, 3 days ago

Yeah, Iceland is even kinda sorta part of the “New World”

As an Icelander I can agree

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Bolvane0 points1 week, 3 days ago

As an Icelander, I 100% agree with this.

Even culturally, we feel like a bridge between the Nordics and North America at times, Europe feels both a bit familiar and yet strangely foreign

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Salsa_and_Light2-1 points1 week, 2 days ago

Iceland seems European, but it's really North American.

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Butch_SpiderDemon3 points1 week, 2 days ago

Here we go again. IT'S ON BOTH TECTONIC PLATES. It's a member of EU and I already won the grid

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (2)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]theguywiththeredhat2 points1 week, 2 days ago

Iceland isn't actually a member of the EU. It is a member of the EEA, along with Norway, Liechtenstein and the EU. But hopefully we will join the EU in the next few years.

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Butch_SpiderDemon2 points1 week, 2 days ago

I stand corrected. But my point still stands, it's a European country.

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]theguywiththeredhat2 points1 week, 2 days ago

Oh, it is most definitely a european country!

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Salsa_and_Light2-1 points1 week, 2 days ago

We don't define regions by tectonic plates.

Many European regions aren't in the EU, many non-European regions are.

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Butch_SpiderDemon2 points1 week, 2 days ago

I'm not arguing with you. I gave my reasons, Iceland won the grid. Have a nice day.

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Salsa_and_Light20 points1 week, 2 days ago

This isn't an argument, we have different opinions.

It is not that serious but congratulations if it matters to you.

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Butch_SpiderDemon2 points1 week, 2 days ago

Saying it's a North American country isn't an opinion it's a straight up incorrect fact

permalinkparentcontexthide replies (1)author-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Salsa_and_Light21 point1 week, 2 days ago

There is no such thing as an objective continental split

permalinkparentcontextauthor-focusas-ofpreserve
[–]Biggest-Incident-3 points1 week, 3 days ago

I second Iceland.
